I was listening to The Jeremy Vine Show the other day and there was a very interesting and heated discussion about obesity in the UK. Recently it has been something very much on my mind.
It all started when I heard about Susanne Eman, the 52 stone American mother, and her quest to reach 115 stone to become the world’s heaviest ever person. In a strange parallel the UK has moved up the obesity rankings to have the largest rate of obesity in Europe and in world terms now lies second only to the USA
The issue has raised its head again this week after a series of papers in the medical journal The Lancet looking at the current worldwide obesity “pandemic”. Researchers predict that if the current trend continues, up to 48% of men and 43% of women in the UK could be obese by 2030, adding an additional £1.9-2 billion per year in medical costs for obesity-related diseases. What is to my mind more worrying is that, according to the article in The Lancet no country has so far been able to control the obesity “pandemic”. Continue reading
